January Birthstone: Garnet

January Birthstone: Garnet

We think January’s birthstone should be the next in vogue gem. It sits well alongside the passion for hygge and self care. Garnet has powers to bring good health to the home and the wearer and it even protects a traveller while they are away from home.

“By her who in January was born
No gem save garnets shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity.”

Garnet is usually known for its deep red colour, similar to rubies. However, it can be found in bright colours from orange to green! Unsurprisingly that much has been written about how the stone can brighten the dark night and ward away nightmares.

Its name means “seedlike” as it looks like shiny pomegranate seeds. With a great love of the homegrown fruit, the Spanish have had a strong relationship with Garnet for hundreds of years.

The American Gem Society says that Garnet is “found all over the world, including Wyoming, Czech Republic, Greece, Russian, Tanzania, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and India.”

“Some even called it the “Gem of Faith,” and it’s believed that to those who wear it and do good, more good will come.”
